LUGANO
Less than an hour from Milan and three hours from Venice and Florence, Lugano is a small but lively town in the Southern part of Switzerland, near the Italian border . Its population amounts to about 29000 inhabitants extending over an area slightly larger than 11 km2. These small dimensions can be surprising if compared to the importance and international fame of the city. Since the second half of the nineteenth century, tourism has been the leading sector of Lugano. The reasons for this are surely found in the subalpine landscape, the lake and the favourable climate conditions of the region, that create a unique and almost surrealistic landscape.
The University of Lugano (Università della Svizzera italiana-USI) was founded in 1996 in the centre of the town.
